Indiatlantic 911 Dispatcher Ashley Willis Honored with Inaugural Florida’s Finest Service Award

BREVARD COUNTY • INDIATLANTIC, FLORIDA — Ashley Willis, a telecommunications officer with the Indiatlantic Police Department, became the first-ever recipient of Florida’s Finest Service Award, a new honor recognizing everyday heroes who take courageous actions to protect their communities.

Willis is being celebrated statewide after her quick thinking helped save the life of a pregnant woman in distress.

The award, presented by Senator Ashley Moody, highlights Floridians who demonstrate extraordinary bravery and commitment. In Willis’ case, it was her instincts and training that made all the difference when a dropped 911 call came into the emergency dispatch center in May 2024.

According to Willis, the call never fully connected — the caller dialed but disconnected before speaking to anyone.

Despite the limited information, Willis treated the situation with urgency, dispatching officers to the caller’s last known location. Moments later, a second call dropped from the same number, further raising her concern.

 

An officer arrived to find a pregnant woman, seven months along, who had been assaulted in a domestic violence situation. Thanks to Willis’ swift action, authorities were able to intervene quickly, ensuring the safety of both the woman and her unborn child.

“The answer to that call could have saved two lives,” Senator Moody remarked during the award presentation.  “What really makes a difference is a passionate connection to the responsibilities of the job.”

Willis, who was previously named the Indiatlantic Police Department’s Telecommunication Officer of the Year in 2024, said she was proud of how her team responded and grateful that their efforts brought help in time.

“I really am honored and just glad to bring that attention to dispatchers because they truly deserve it,” Willis said. “I hope this shines a spotlight on the vital role dispatchers play behind the scenes.”

The Florida’s Finest Service Award is designed to recognize acts of courage across all walks of life, and officials say Willis’ story is a powerful example of how decisive action can save lives and strengthen communities.
