The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of a Publix-brand baby food item as a Class II health risk, warning consumers about potentially harmful levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic found in the product.

The recall involves the “Greenwise Pear Kiwi Spinach & Pea Baby Food Pouch,” a 4-ounce product intended for infants six months and older.

According to the FDA, the item was distributed in over 53,000 units across eight Southern states, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Virginia, and Kentucky.

The affected lot, bearing the code 24BA306 and a “Best if used by” date of November 1, 2025, was shipped in cases of 14 pouches.

Publix initiated the recall on May 9, and the FDA officially categorized it on June 3.

A Class II designation means use of the product could result in temporary or medically reversible health issues. While the risk of serious health complications is considered low, it is not entirely absent.

Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic are especially concerning for infants and young children, who are more vulnerable to their toxic effects. Chronic exposure, even at low levels, can contribute to developmental delays, behavioral concerns, and cognitive impairments.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted products have been removed from all store shelves. To date, there have been no reported illnesses,” said Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous. “Customers may return the product to any Publix location for a full refund.”

According to First Focus on Children, an advocacy group focused on child welfare, heavy metals can enter food products through various sources, including agricultural chemicals, soil contamination, and manufacturing additives. They warn that contamination may occur at multiple stages of food production and processing.

The FDA advises parents and caregivers to carefully inspect any “Greenwise Pear Kiwi Spinach & Pea” pouches they may have purchased and avoid serving the product under any circumstances. Anyone who suspects a child has consumed the recalled item and is showing symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.
