Seniors are more likely to suffer from heat stroke in the summer

Seniors are more susceptible to heat-related illness and injury. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature. Seniors are more likely to suffer from heat stroke in the summer than younger people.

BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — Seniors are more susceptible to heat-related illness and injury. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature.

Seniors are more likely to suffer from heat stroke in the summer than younger people.

Seniors and caregivers should keep the following tips from the Council on Aging in mind as the days get hotter this summer:

● Stay Hydrated: Drink eight or more glasses of water a day.
● Know the side effects of medication, such as drowsiness or sun sensitivity.
● Plan your days accordingly, depending on the weather.
● Stay cool indoors in air conditioning or go swimming outdoors.
● Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing.
● Have a list of people to call in case of emergency.
