Message from Sheriff Wayne Ivey

Operation “Southern Slow Down” is in full effect, but trust me when I tell you that this initiative isn’t about just one week, it’s about informing the community about the significant hazards associated with excessive speeds on our roadways.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Operation “Southern Slow Down” is in full effect, but trust me when I tell you that this initiative isn’t about just one week, it’s about informing the community about the significant hazards associated with excessive speeds on our roadways.

It’s about working to reduce accidents and fatalities along our roadways related to speeding each and every day and sending a message that “Speed Kills!”

As part of the operation, on Monday members of our Motor Unit joined agencies from across Florida at Daytona’s International Speedway to kick off the initiative that targets speeders from July 14-19.

Operation “Southern Slow Down” is an annual, week-long speed enforcement and public education campaign conducted in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the southeastern states of Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

This initiative builds on a longstanding tradition of collaboration and aims to reduce speed-related fatalities and serious injury crashes by targeting speeding and aggressive driving violations.

We hear all too often about fatal accidents on our roadways here in Brevard County and especially on I 95 and so many times, speed is a factor.

Please take this opportunity to remember that it’s not just your life at risk, but everyone around you when you speed. So when you hit the road, make smart choices and drive the speed limit as we want everyone to arrive safely at their destinations.
