double red flags signal a complete swimming ban

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Brevard County Fire Rescue officials are urging Space Coast residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution at local beaches as Hurricane Erin approaches, bringing the potential for dangerous conditions along the shoreline.
Officials warn that the storm may create strong rip currents, high surf, and hazardous waters in the coming days.
Even experienced swimmers are at risk of being pulled away from shore in seconds by rip currents. Large waves are also expected, which could knock beachgoers off their feet and cause injuries.
Authorities stress that double red flags signal a complete swimming ban and should be strictly followed.

Swimmers are also advised to remain near staffed lifeguard towers, which can be located through Brevard County Fire Rescue’s Ocean Rescue Services website.
For those caught in a rip current, safety experts recommend staying calm, swimming parallel to shore until free of the current’s pull, and then returning to the beach. If escape is not possible, floating or treading water while signaling for help is advised.
Officials also emphasize the importance of designating a water watcher, someone prepared to call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency.
The message from Brevard County Fire Rescue is clear: respect the safety flags, listen to lifeguards, and recognize the power of the ocean. With the storm drawing closer, beachgoers are reminded of one critical rule: when in doubt, stay out.
