BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — National Weather Service officials are keeping a close eye on activity in the Atlantic as Hurricane Erin strengthens and two additional disturbances show potential for development.

As of late Sunday evening, August 17, Hurricane Erin had intensified into a major storm with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph.

The system, located east of the Caribbean, was moving west-northwest at 13 mph. While its long-range track remains uncertain, forecasters stress that Florida residents should remain alert as the storm continues to move through the Atlantic.

Closer to the United States, a disturbance several hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina is showing only limited signs of organization. The system carries just a 10 percent chance of development over the next week and is not expected to pose a significant threat.

Farther east, a tropical wave near the Cabo Verde Islands is producing showers and thunderstorms with a 30 percent chance of forming into a cyclone in the coming days. This system is forecast to move steadily westward across the Atlantic and could warrant closer attention later this week, depending on its development.

While neither disturbance presents an immediate concern for Brevard County, the presence of multiple systems during the peak of hurricane season serves as a reminder for residents to review their storm plans and remain prepared.

Emergency officials continue to monitor conditions closely and urge residents to follow updates from the National Hurricane Center and local authorities.
