Problem-Solving as a Promise – The MMI Engineered Solutions Approach to Customer Care

By  //  August 27, 2025

SALINE, Mich. — When Doug Callahan reflects on his three decades in manufacturing, his first thoughts aren’t about machines, molds, or margins. He talks about people.

“Our people are the most important part of MMI,” said Callahan, president and owner of MMI Engineered Solutions. “They’re the reason we’ve been successful.”

It’s not the kind of answer you always hear from a leader in an industry defined by precision and process. But for Callahan, it’s more than a talking point. He believes the company’s foundation has always been its employees, and that belief has shaped the culture, the growth, and the way MMI responds to challenges.

“They are the foundation of our success,” Callahan said. “We want every employee to understand how their work connects directly to the customer. That kind of ownership changes everything.”

A people-first philosophy has helped MMI grow from a Midwest-based manufacturer into a global powerhouse in advanced composites and engineered resin solutions. For more than 44 years, the company has built a reputation as a partner to original equipment manufacturers across the heavy truck, automotive, and material handling industries.

“Our philosophy is rooted in collaboration and problem-solving,” Callahan said. “We see every customer relationship as a partnership, one where we bring advanced engineering, in-house tooling, and decades of experience to solve complex challenges together.”

That approach means MMI Engineered Solutions often works side by side with customer teams from the earliest stages of a project. “When customers bring us in early, it shows they see us as more than a supplier. They see us as a partner who can shape the program, reduce costs, and improve performance from the ground up,” he shared.

Building Trust Through Partnership At Mmi Engineered Solutions

MMI’s ability to combine technical expertise with flexibility has become a hallmark of its service. The company designs and produces injection molded parts and tooling that reduce weight, improve performance, and cut costs – solutions that often determine whether a program launches smoothly or stalls under pressure.

The company has also built resilience into its operations. During recent supply chain disruptions, when one customer faced a critical shortage that threatened to halt production, MMI stepped in with urgency. Its engineers diversified suppliers, optimized inventory, and reconfigured tooling to keep the program on track.

“We did not want them to feel like they were facing the problem alone,” Callahan explained. “We took ownership of finding a solution. That’s what partnership means to us.”

How MMI’s Tooling Advantage Changes The Game

One of MMI’s most valuable competitive strengths lies in its tooling operation. By designing, building, and qualifying new injection molds in-house, the company controls every step of the process.

“Having our own tooling operation means we can react faster to changes,” Callahan explained. “When a customer needs an adjustment, we are not waiting on a third party. We can make the change ourselves, validate it, and get the product into production right away.”

That agility has proven critical. When a customer requested design changes late in the process, MMI’s team reconfigured molds overnight and delivered them on schedule.

Positioned For Success

MMI Engineered Solutions is headquartered in a 145,000-square-foot facility in Saline, Michigan, with additional operations in Warren, Michigan, and Monterrey, Mexico. Each site is strategically placed to keep production close to customers and ensure faster delivery. To meet growing demand, the company is building a second 200,000-square-foot facility in Monterrey.

“We know logistics play a massive role in customer satisfaction,” a company spokesperson said. “Our locations, combined with in-house tooling and full-service capabilities, allow us to turn projects quickly while ensuring precision.”

The Troy, Michigan, office serves as an engineering and sales hub, connecting customers to technical expertise and support across North America.

The company has thrived under the leadership of Doug Callahan, who brings a rare blend of technical expertise and business leadership to MMI Engineered Solutions.

A mechanical engineer by training, he earned his BSME from Lawrence Technological University in 1993, later completing an MBA in Global Business Operations from the same institution. He went on to earn a Juris Doctorate in patent law from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 2007, equipping him with a deep understanding of intellectual property and innovation.

Beyond his academic achievements, Callahan is an entrepreneur, author, and award-winning business leader. His 2019 book, Hope Is Not a Plan: Building One of America’s Fastest Growing Companies, lays out the principles that have guided his career: treat people as your greatest asset, create a culture of collaboration, and rely on measurable processes rather than wishful thinking.

“Hope should not be part of your business plan,” Callahan writes, highlighting the philosophy he has put into practice at MMI to drive consistent growth and long-term success.

A Culture Of Care That Sets MMI Engineered Solutions Apart

For Callahan, technology and process only tell part of the story. The rest is culture. Employees undergo structured training, mentorship, and cross-functional learning that reinforce MMI’s values.

“Our structured training creates a culture where quality, safety, and customer focus are non-negotiable,” Callahan said. “We want every employee to see how their work contributes to the customer’s success.”

That culture shows up in everyday moments. Truck drivers routinely comment on how quickly they are unloaded at the Saline plant. “Awesome place here,” wrote driver Tommie Williams. “I showed up five hours before my appointment time and Ricky had me unloaded in 25 minutes flat. I will definitely run this load again.” Another driver, Abdirizak Hassan, praised the “nice people” and quick turnaround during a night shift.

Callahan points to those experiences as proof that MMI’s philosophy isn’t confined to boardrooms or blueprints. “It’s about respect,” he said. “When people feel valued, whether it’s an employee or a customer, everything else follows.”

Innovating For The Future Of Manufacturing

MMI is doubling down on investments in robotics, automation, and AI-driven quality systems to expand capacity and customization. The company’s Warren site recently added a 3D profiler for engine component verification, while other facilities are scaling up with new technologies and expanded floor space.

“We’re not just reacting to industry trends, we’re anticipating them,” a spokesperson said. “Everything we do is built to scale, adapt, and endure.”

To track customer satisfaction, MMI integrates scorecards, on-time delivery performance, and quality metrics with regular review meetings. Tools like APQP, DFMEA, and PFMEA are used to capture feedback across a product’s lifecycle, ensuring that lessons learned feed directly into product improvements and quality control.

“Innovation is only valuable if it’s repeatable and reliable,” the spokesperson said. “That’s how we build long-term trust.”

For Callahan, the future of MMI Engineered Solutions is less about size or scale than about staying true to the principles that brought the company this far. Growth matters, but culture will always come first.

“Our mission is simple,” he said. “To engineer what’s next, and to do it with people who care deeply about the work and about one another. When you build on that foundation, you can weather any challenge and embrace any opportunity.”
