Week 6 of the high school football season was a mix of close games and some blowouts. Many teams that needed bounce-back wins achieved them, while others fell short. A few teams secured big-time road wins, adding to their confidence as we enter the second half of the season.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Week 6 of the high school football season was a mix of close games and some blowouts. Many teams that needed bounce-back wins achieved them, while others fell short of their goals. A few teams secured big-time road wins, adding to their confidence as we enter the second half of the season.

This is the 31st season of high school football coverage for the principals of Space Coast Daily and the Friday Night Locker Room – brought to you by Erdman Automotive, Health First, 4Ever Young of Merritt Island, and All Points.

Astronaut 14 – Bayside 6

This game had it all, starting with a lot of rain and a brief lightning delay before kickoff. With Bayside’s homecoming game, they were looking to come out and win this one for the enormous crowd that had shown up. A sloppy back-and-forth game that came down to the end, Astronaut led by a single point for nearly the entire game, and Dre’kwon Jones’ touchdown late in the fourth gave the War Eagles an extra cushion in this one.

Rockledge 42 – Deltona 0

Deltona had beaten one Brevard County team this year in Viera, 14-6, and with Viera beating Rockledge in Week 1, this game looked to be a highly competitive matchup. Rockledge dominated, and after the bye week, they are now finding their groove. The win is a huge momentum builder for the Raiders as they will enter a brutal stretch of games in the coming weeks. After starting the season 0-3, the Raiders have won their past two games.

Eau Gallie 27 – Titusville 14

Eau Gallie faced a test in Titusville as they sought to build on the emotional win from a week ago. With this game being the Commodores’ Senior Night, they were especially amped up for this game, and they got it done. This game was also a district win, which means more than anything to Eau Gallie as they look to make a postseason run. In two weeks, Eau Gallie has a big date with Merritt Island to secure the top spot in their district.

Heritage 35 – South Fork 7

Heritage was in dire need of a win after losing four straight, and they went down to Stuart and got a convincing win over South Fork. The Panthers have a lot of talent on their team, but their schedule has been unfavorable. Heritage will now have a bye week before going back down south to face Westwood.

Merritt Island 52 – Ed White 49

Ed White controlled this game nearly from start to finish, even up by three scores going into the fourth quarter. However, the Mustangs did not show any quit and ended up on the winning side of a one-score game this time around. One-score matches were the crutch for this Mustang’s team a year ago, and both their losses this season came by one score, so to win this one was not only a relief but a huge confidence boost.

Osceola 18 – Melbourne 10

Melbourne entered this game with a 4-1 record and looked to validate itself against an excellent Osceola team. Even in the loss, the Bulldogs showed tremendous grit. Melbourne was the underdog going into this one, as Osceola proved to be the most challenging task yet, and they almost pulled off the upset. The Bulldogs have some more winnable games in front of them as they look to close out the regular season on a high note.

Space Coast 48 – Cocoa Beach 21

Space Coast, with just one loss, is trying to keep its nearly perfect season alive, and it did it in a big way. Cocoa Beach needed this game as they are still searching for some consistency, but it was all Vipers in this one. Space Coast will now host Bayside next week.

Satellite 29 – Palm Bay 3

Dan Burke faced his old stomping grounds in Palm Bay, and they made it look easy. Satellite has put together an undefeated season and is not slowing down anytime soon. With three games left on the schedule, the Scorpions are looking to finish off the year undefeated ,which would be impressive in their first year under Dan Burke.

Merritt Island Christian 42 – Calvary Chapel Academy 0

This game was a battle between the two 8-man football teams in Brevard County, and it was the Cougars who reigned supreme. Coach Matt Handwork and his team continue their dominance throughout the state in 8-man football as they look to run the table en route to another state title.

Following a battle between the county, there is now a clear No. 1 team has emerged. While the middle of the rankings has been stirred up, there are some teams on the rise in the rankings and looking to gain respect over the coming weeks.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Following a battle between the top two teams in Brevard County, a clear No. 1 team has emerged. While the middle of the rankings has been stirred up, there are some teams on the rise in the rankings and looking to gain respect over the coming weeks.

No. 1 – Eau Gallie Commodores (3-2)

The Commodores have finally slayed the beast after so many years of domination. Eau Gallie was probably not favored entering the Tiger den Friday night, and they sure played like underdogs. The Commodores’ stingy defense gave Cocoa fits all night, long forcing turnovers throughout the night,ight which led to the 25-13 victory. Eau Gallie will now host Titusville in a big district game for both sides.

No. 2 – Cocoa Tigers (2-3)

Year in and year out, Cocoa has been the best in the county, and they have now lost a game in Brevard County since 2019. Their 28-game in-county win streak has come to an end, but they still have plenty of games left on the schedule to right the ship. Cocoa has not been able to gain real traction on offense, while the defense has been as expected. The Tigers will now have a bye week before traveling to Miami Norland, which will be an arduous task.

No. 3 – Merritt Island Mustangs (3-2)

Merritt Island has been impressive this season, and they hosted a talented St. Cloud team this past week. St. Cloud came into the game 3-1 and was looking to hold on to this one as they held a 21-10 lead going into the fourth quarter. Kevin Verpaele and the offense answered the call, and then the defense did its job, providing the game-winning turnover. Merritt Island will have an away game on the road before entering district play with matchups against Eau Gallie and Titusville.

No. 4 – Melbourne Bulldogs (4-1)

The Bulldogs’ only actual test thus far was a road game at Merritt Island, and they lost, but other than that, the Bulldogs have handled business. They completely dominated Palm Bay 59-14, but in comes Osceola this Friday, and it will surely be the best team the Bulldogs have faced this year. If Melbourne can pull the win out this Friday, it will give them a huge confidence boost as we advance through the rest of the season.

No. 5 – Titusville Terriers (2-3)

Although the Terriers have dropped three games this season so far, their schedule has been challenging, and they are now entering the most crucial game of the year this Friday when they head to Eau Gallie. Titusville will be looking to catch Eau Gallie off-guard as the Commodores are riding high after their two-touchdown victory over Cocoa. Other than the loss at West Orange, the Terriers have been competitive in every game this season.

No. 6 – Viera Hawks (3-2)

The Hawks dropped the game at Titusville a week ago, hoping to bounce back and return to their winning ways, and they did just that. Viera headed to Kissimmee to face Tohopekaliga in a road game that seemed tricky; sometimes, far travels can make a game a little more difficult than being local. However, the Hawks took the business trip and came out with a 44-22 victory.

No. 7 – Heritage Panthers (1-4)

Heritage hasn’t performed as they hoped this season, but the team still boasts a lot of talent. Their schedule has been loaded with challenging games, and this past week was no exception. Facing Woodford County, one of the best teams in Kentucky, was a test that Heritage wanted to get back on track. With now four straight losses, the Panthers are hoping to end the streak this week at South Fork.

No. 8 – Holy Trinity Tigers (4-1)

Holy Trinity checks into the rankings at No. 8 after their nearly perfect performance over Astronaut. The only loss Holy Trinity has on their record was on the road at Titusville in a narrow defeat. The Tigers defeated Astronaut 38-14 and beat them comfortably, now they will face John Carroll Catholic in two weeks which will be a measure of how good this team truly is.

Week 5 of the prep football season saw some nail-biting victories, blowouts, and an upset. Most Brevard County teams will be entering district play in the coming weeks, which makes for some intriguing matchups.

Eau Gallie 25, Cocoa 13

In the Space Coast Daily “Game of the Week,” it was a battle between the county’s best for respect, bragging rights, and ultimately the No. 1 spot in the county. Riding a 28-game in-county win streak, the Tigers were looking to continue their dominance, but Eau Gallie had other plans. The Commodores forced five turnovers in the 25-13 victory over Cocoa, Lherisee, and Corbin led the way with two touchdowns apiece.

Merritt Island 24, St. Cloud 21

This game came down to the wire, but the Mustangs prevailed against a talented St. Cloud team. Trailing into the fourth quarter, it was now or never time for the Mustangs’ offense, and they came up big when it mattered most. Merritt Island improves to 3-2 on the season and is just 14 points from being undefeated this season. While this win is not a district or in-county win, it does hold weight given St. Cloud’s talent.

Holy Trinity 38, Astronaut 14

Holy Trinity dominated this one from start to finish, an impressive win over an Astronaut team that came in at 3-1 and was ready to prove their worth. The quarterback-wide receiver duo of Rico Buitrago and Jaeden McMillan was nearly unstoppable in the 38-14 win, and Holy Trinity is off to an incredible 4-1 start to the season. The Tigers will now have two weeks to prepare for John Carroll Catholic, which will be a great test.

Satellite 24, Atlantic 7

The Dan Burke era at Satellite has yet to see a loss. Cocoa Beach gave them a scare a week ago, but this squad is still undefeated at 6-0 in the SSAA division. Satellite will host Palm Bay next week in a battle that will see Dan Burke face his old stomping grounds.

Space Coast 21, Celebration 7

Space Coast dropped its first game of the season last week against Astronaut, but bounced back nicely against Celebration. Quarterback Zion Sandy has looked superb this season, and they will need him to continue that play if they want to win another state title.

Spruce Creek 29, Titusville 22

Titusville had just picked up a big win over Viera and was really trying to get their first big road win of the season. Spruce Creek posed a test for the Terriers, and they were unable to secure the win. Titusville fought hard and still looks to be one of the better teams in Brevard County. They will go to Eau Gallie next week, which is a district game.

Viera 44, Tohopekaliga 22

Big win on the road for the Hawks. After losing a week ago, they needed to bounce back in a big way, and they did. That makes the Hawks 3-2 on the season as they will head into a bye week before facing Cocoa Beach. Viera still has a lot to prove when being considered one of the County’s elite, but they will have their fair share of games to do so.

Bishop Moore 41, MCC 13

MCC has dropped its last two games and knew this one would be no easier. After an 8-3 season last year, the expectations for the Hustlers were pretty high, but an absolutely brutal schedule is hard to escape. MCC will have a bye week to regroup, but then head to Titusville for a matchup with the Terriers that will be another difficult task.

Cocoa Beach 28, St. Edward’s 25

A nail-biting victory is not what the Minutemen would have wanted, but they came out with the win and are happy to end the losing streak. Losses to Palm Bay and Satellite are games they will look back and wish they had; however, there are still winnable games for Cocoa Beach as they head into the middle stretch of the season.

Woodford County (KY) 35, Heritage 17

After the game was moved from Heritage to Cocoa a week ago, the Panthers were ready to take their home field on Friday night. However, a very talented team from Kentucky arrived, determined not to travel to Florida without a win. Woodford County, one of the top teams in Kentucky, added to Heritage’s losing streak with a 35-17 victory.

Melbourne 59, Palm Bay 14

Melbourne faced their old rivals in Palm Bay and made a statement. Melbourne will improve to 4-1 and get ready for a big time game with Osceola. The Bulldogs are looking to gain respect as they move through the middle of the schedule. A 59-14 loss for Palm Bay will sting, but they will forget about this one and move on.
