Pickup Driver Killed After Running Red Light, Crashing on U.S. 1 and Blacks Road in Cocoa, FHP Says

Witnesses told investigators the pickup had been speeding before the crash

A man driving a pickup truck was killed after running a red light and crashing into another vehicle at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Blacks Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – A 49-year-old Cocoa man driving a pickup truck was killed after running a red light and crashing into another vehicle at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Blacks Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 at a high rate of speed when the driver failed to slow down for stopped traffic ahead.

The truck swerved to the right, entered the intersection against a red light, and collided with a 2019 Nissan Sentra that had a green light and was attempting to make a left turn.

The impact caused the pickup to leave the roadway, strike a utility pole, and overturn several times before coming to rest on its roof. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The driver of the Nissan was not injured and remained at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators the pickup had been speeding before the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
