Improves Walkability With New Sidewalk Network Near Community Hub

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The City of Melbourne has completed construction of approximately 1.2 miles of new sidewalks surrounding Stone Magnet Middle School and the Eddie Lee Taylor Sr. Community Complex, marking a significant step in the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
The improvements include new sidewalk segments along key corridors heavily used by students and neighborhood residents.
Sidewalks were added along Lipscomb Street from Florida Avenue to Reverend Nathaniel L. Harris Street, along the east side of Monroe Street from Spain Ave. to University Boulevard, and along University Boulevard from Colbert Court to Monroe Street.
The project also includes several traffic calming features designed to protect pedestrians and encourage safer driving. Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and traffic cushions were installed on Monroe and Lipscomb Streets to slow vehicles as they approach newly created crosswalks.

The project was funded through the Florida Department of Transportation’s Florida Safe Routes to School program, which supports initiatives that encourage children to walk or bicycle to school by improving the safety and accessibility of surrounding neighborhoods.
The Stone Magnet Middle School Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Improvements project continues Melbourne’s broader investment in pedestrian and bicyclist infrastructure.
Earlier this year, the city completed one mile of new sidewalks and pedestrian upgrades along NASA Boulevard between Eddie Allen Road and Gateway Drive.
Construction is also underway on the Melbourne Southwest Trails project, which will add nearly two miles of new sidewalks and multi-use paths along portions of Dairy Rd., Florida Ave., and University Blvd.
City officials say the ongoing projects reflect Melbourne’s long-term commitment to creating safer, more connected routes for all who travel on foot or by bicycle.
