BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A routine traffic stop in Melbourne escalated into a narcotics arrest Tuesday evening after officers discovered methamphetamine, suspected GHB, and drug paraphernalia inside a vehicle, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

The driver, identified as James Mistele, was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A passenger, Johnathon Murillo, was also taken into custody. He faces charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident occurred on September 17 near the 4000 block of South Babcock Street, where Officer Kylee McCarrell initiated the traffic stop.

During the encounter, a Melbourne Police Department K-9 unit was deployed and alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle.

A subsequent search revealed approximately 10.6 grams of methamphetamine, several bottles containing a substance believed to be GHB—commonly known as the “date rape drug”—and multiple items of drug paraphernalia, investigators said.

Both men were booked into the Brevard County Jail as the investigation remains ongoing. Police have not released additional details on the suspected GHB pending further testing.
