BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — The West Melbourne School for Science, a choice elementary school serving students from Pre-K through sixth grade, has completed a major expansion project aimed at meeting the demands of its growing enrollment while enhancing hands-on learning opportunities.
The 12,450-square-foot addition, developed in partnership with Brevard Public Schools, Spiezle Architectural Group, Inc., and TSARK Architecture, introduces a wide range of new indoor and outdoor facilities designed to support both traditional and innovative learning methods.
Among the highlights of the project is a new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) laboratory that features a makerspace for hands-on building and experimentation.
The expansion also includes new art and music classrooms, a robotics area, and collaboration and demonstration spaces where students can work together on interactive projects. Several classrooms are now connected by flexible breakout rooms, allowing teachers to divide students into smaller groups for discussions, workshops, and applied learning activities.
“As Brevard Public Schools continues to see higher demand for choice options, our task was to expand the West Melbourne School for Science to meet the needs of an expanded student body,” said Steven G. Siegel, AIA, LEED AP, Principal with Spiezle.
“It is crucial to create classrooms and collaboration spaces that enhance education today and meet the demands of technology and multi-modal learning that will continue to evolve in the years to come.”

The upgrades go beyond the classroom. The expansion emphasizes outdoor learning and wellness with a new garden space where students can engage in interactive science lessons, flexible seating areas for open-air instruction, and a redesigned playground to promote physical activity.
Infrastructure improvements include expanded parking lots, upgraded bus and parent drop-off zones, and 8,400 square feet of canopy-covered areas that provide shade and weather protection during arrival and dismissal.
A 980-square-foot cafeteria expansion also increases the school’s capacity to serve students efficiently.
“It is incredible to see how design teams can create cutting-edge buildings that foster student-teacher autonomy and safety while enhancing the learning experience overall,” Siegel added.
“The architectural and interior design elements were thoughtfully crafted to encourage collaboration, creativity, and independent learning.”
School officials say the expansion will not only accommodate the school’s current student population but also provide space for future growth, ensuring that West Melbourne School for Science remains a top choice for families in the region.
The enhancements are part of a broader effort by Brevard Public Schools to expand choice programs and strengthen science- and technology-focused education throughout the county.
The new facilities are now fully open to students and staff, marking the start of a new chapter for the West Melbourne School for Science as it continues to prepare young learners for a rapidly evolving world.
