BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Hundreds of fifth- and sixth-grade students across Brevard Public Schools (BPS) put their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to the test during this year’s “Destination Moon” competition, a multi-day event featuring hands-on, space-themed challenges.

Held throughout early March, the competition engaged students in activities ranging from coding missions and robotics to engineering design and teamwork exercises.

Participants tackled projects such as Moon Base design, programming with Micro:Bit and Spike Prime systems, and creative “Space Influencer” presentations, all designed to encourage problem-solving, collaboration and real-world application of STEM concepts.

District officials said the event continues to grow in both participation and impact, highlighting student innovation and interest in space exploration. Support from community partner The Boeing Company helped make the program possible.

March 2 Results

Lockmar Elementary School led the day’s competition, earning top finishes in MoonCraft and Spike Prime, along with a second-place finish in multiple categories to secure the Top Overall award.

Viera Elementary School captured first place in both Design (Moon Base Blitz) and Micro:Bit competitions, while South Lake Elementary School placed first in Space Influencer. West Melbourne School for Science earned a Teamwork win, and Manatee Elementary placed second in Micro:Bit.

March 5 Results

Riviera Elementary dominated the competition, winning MoonCraft and Micro:Bit while also earning Top Overall honors. Christa McAuliffe Elementary secured first in Spike Prime, while Endeavour Elementary led in Space Influencer. Lewis Carroll Elementary placed first in Design, and Sea Park Elementary earned second in the same category.

March 9 Results

Port Malabar Elementary delivered one of the strongest showings of the event, winning four categories — MoonCraft, Spike Prime, Design and Top Overall — while also placing in additional events. Sherwood Elementary School earned first-place finishes in Space Influencer and Micro:Bit, while Croton and MILA Elementary shared second place in MoonCraft.

March 11 Results

Meadowlane Intermediate closed out the competition with a Top Overall win, highlighted by first-place finishes in Design and Micro:Bit. Mims Elementary led MoonCraft, while John F. Turner Elementary topped the Space Influencer category. Jupiter Elementary earned first in Spike Prime, and Westside Elementary and Sunrise Elementary rounded out the day with additional placements.

School leaders praised the students’ creativity and teamwork throughout the event, noting that programs like Destination Moon play a key role in preparing the next generation for careers in science and engineering.
