BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – A potentially dangerous situation was stopped before it could begin at Palm Bay Magnet High School this morning, thanks to the quick response of school staff and the efficiency of the OPENGATE Weapons Detection system.

During morning arrival, the OPENGATE system alerted security staff to a student attempting to enter campus with a loaded handgun. The weapon was immediately confiscated, and the student was placed into police custody without incident.

School officials emphasized that at no time did the student make it past the front office security checkpoint, and there were no known threats made toward students or staff. The situation was contained within moments, ensuring the safety of the entire school community.

“All students and staff are safe,” BPS confirmed in a statement. “We commend the vigilance and professionalism of our staff, whose swift response ensured the safety of everyone on campus.”

Administrators also expressed gratitude for the district’s investment in the OPENGATE Weapons Detection system. Today’s incident, they noted, underscores the importance of such technology in maintaining a secure educational environment.

The school continues to cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.

Classes resumed as normal following the incident.

The student is identified as a 17-year-old male from in Melbourne. He has been charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds and Possession of a Firearm by a Minor under 18.
