Louisville, Kentucky — A new scholarship opportunity addressing the critical need for patient-centered medical practitioners has been announced through the establishment of The Dr. James Charasika Scholarship for Medical Students. This initiative, founded by Dr. James Charasika, seeks to support undergraduate students pursuing medical careers who demonstrate commitment to holistic, preventive healthcare and equitable patient care.

The scholarship program awards $1,000 to qualifying undergraduate students enrolled in accredited colleges or universities across the United States. While one primary recipient will be selected, additional awards may be granted to other applicants who submit exceptionally worthy essays. Applicants must be on a demonstrated pre-medical track, including majors such as Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related fields, while maintaining a strong academic record.

Dr. James Charasika, a physician with over 40 years of clinical experience now enjoying his retirement since April 14, 2022, established this scholarship to support students who share his vision of transforming healthcare delivery. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Charasika advocated for shifting the medical system from reactive “sick care” to proactive, preventive models that prioritize patient wellness and comprehensive treatment approaches.

“The future of medicine depends on practitioners who understand that healthcare extends beyond treating illness,” explains Dr. James Charasika. “This scholarship recognizes students who grasp the importance of addressing systemic barriers and advancing patient-centered care principles.”

The application process centers on a substantive essay addressing a significant challenge applicants anticipate facing in their medical careers. Students must articulate how they plan to integrate principles of innovation, equity, and patient-centeredness to navigate systemic, clinical, or ethical obstacles while improving patient outcomes. This essay requirement reflects Dr. Charasika’s belief that future physicians must demonstrate both analytical thinking and commitment to healthcare reform.

Dr. James Charasika’s professional journey informs the scholarship’s mission. A graduate of Meharry Medical College, where he ranked fifth in his class, Dr. Charasika became the first Black physician recruited to the University of Louisville’s Department of Family Practice, where he served as Chief Resident and Assistant Professor. A member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, he founded and directed the Louisville Primary Care Center, P.S.C. (LPCC), establishing the first private practice of its kind in Kentucky. He also founded the Louisville Patient-Centered Medical Home (LPCMH), earning certification from the National Committee for Quality Assurance as one of Kentucky’s first PCMH facilities.

His clinical expertise in diabetes management and preventive care gained national recognition, while his advocacy work included meetings with U.S. Congressman John Yarmuth to promote healthcare system transformation. Dr. James Charasika dedicated significant effort to mentoring medical students, residents, and nurse practitioners through his role as Clinical Instructor, delivering over 5,800 babies throughout his career while maintaining focus on comprehensive family medicine.

The scholarship application deadline is August 15, 2026, with recipient announcements scheduled for September 15, 2026. Applications must include academic transcripts, proof of enrollment in pre-medical coursework, and the required essay response demonstrating understanding of healthcare challenges and solutions aligned with patient-centered care principles.

This scholarship program addresses the growing need for medical professionals trained in holistic approaches to patient care. As healthcare systems face mounting pressures from chronic disease management, health disparities, and access barriers, Dr. James Charasika recognizes that supporting students committed to systemic solutions represents essential investment in healthcare’s future.

Eligible students from any U.S. state may apply through the scholarship website, where complete application guidelines, eligibility requirements, and submission procedures are available. The selection process evaluates academic performance, essay quality, and demonstrated commitment to the scholarship’s core values of innovation, equity, and patient-centered medical practice.
