BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA – The Health First cardiothoracic surgery program was prominently featured this month at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) annual conference in New Orleans.

The Health First program was featured in a video alongside national leaders, including Penn, Yale, and USC, during a 3-day conference attended by hundreds of national and international surgeons.

The recognition reflects not only the Health First program’s outcomes but also the skill, dedication, and compassion of the team that delivers life-saving care to the patients and families who call Florida’s Space Coast “home.”

Founded in 1964, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a not-for-profit professional organization representing surgeons, researchers, and allied health care professionals dedicated to achieving the best possible outcomes for surgeries of the heart, lungs, and esophagus, as well as other chest procedures.

STS is the world’s largest cardiothoracic surgery organization, with more than 8,000 members across 102 countries.

“We are fortunate to have such amazing physicians, leaders, and supporting team members who have set the bar high for the standard of heart care here in our region,” said Health First President and CEO Terry Forde.

“Finding new ways to share and tell the Health First story with our community is important, and this video certainly is a powerful testimony of what we do, why we do it, and who we do it for. What truly sets us apart is the team: collaborative, patient-focused, and supportive – from first conversation through recovery. As Dr. Thierry Momplaisir so perfectly underscores in the video, ‘Every day we step into the hospital, we have an opportunity to give somebody their life back.’

“I am grateful to our physicians, APPs, nurses, technologists, perfusionists, therapists, and support teams for the level of compassion and teamwork that makes all the difference.”

“Health First is honored to partner with Brevard Public Schools in developing this unique pathway,” said Terry Forde, Health First President and CEO. “Over the next decade, the need for healthcare professionals at every level is expected to rise dramatically. Through immersive experiences, education, and hands-on learning, students in this program will gain real-world exposure while developing valuable skills that prepare them for college or the workforce.”

Health First’s Heart & Vascular Program this past year earned its third straight 3-star overall isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) recognition from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

The prestigious honor recognizes Health First’s patient care and outcomes relative to isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures.

The 3-star rating denotes the highest quality category and places Health First’s Heart & Vascular Program among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada.

The STS star rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care, rating the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs across the United States and Canada.

The star rating is calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant.
