Arizona State Board of Education Confirms Primavera Online School is “Highly Performing,” Clears Academic Record Going Back to 2022
By Space Coast Daily // March 4, 2026

The Arizona State Board of Education has issued Primavera Online School a letter grade of B for the 2024–2025 school year, a designation the state defines as “highly performing.” The grade was approved during the board’s January 26, 2026, public meeting, following updated accountability calculations and a review of student performance.
In addition to the current-year grade, the Arizona Department of Education conducted a retrospective review of Primavera’s academic standing for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 school years. Applying performance standards specific to alternative schools, the department determined that Primavera’s outcomes during each of those years would have warranted letter grades of “at least C,” placing the school within the state’s definition of a performing institution throughout that period.
Together, the findings establish that Primavera has met and consistently exceeded state performance expectations.
What the Review Found
The review is significant because it addresses a period during which Primavera’s academic standing may have appeared unclear under general accountability metrics. Standard school grading frameworks were not designed with alternative school populations in mind, and applying them to a student body that disproportionately includes credit-deficient, high-mobility, or otherwise at-risk students can produce results that do not accurately reflect a school’s performance.
By assessing Primavera’s 2022, 2023, and 2024 data under the appropriate alternative school standards, ADE was able to provide a more accurate picture of how the school performed during those years. The conclusion that Primavera was a performing school throughout is consistent with the school’s current B-grade standing.
“These findings confirm that Primavera’s academic performance has always been within the state’s definition of a performing school and is currently a highly performing school,” the school said following the board’s decision.
About Primavera Online School
Founded in 2001, Primavera Online School is a tuition-free, fully accredited public charter school serving Arizona students in grades K–12, offering entirely online instruction. The school has educated more than 250,000 Arizona students since its founding and currently operates as one of the state’s largest alternative education providers.
Primavera’s model is built around flexibility and personalized instruction. It serves students who face barriers to success in traditional school settings, including those dealing with credit deficiency, employment obligations, housing instability, or other circumstances that make a conventional school schedule impractical. The school offers a rigorous, award-winning curriculum delivered through a highly interactive virtual learning environment, with instruction from highly qualified teachers.
The school is Cognia-accredited and NCAA-approved. Enrollment is open to all Arizona K–12 students at no cost, with no commuting requirements and no rigid daily schedule. For many of the students Primavera serves, that flexibility is the deciding factor in whether they earn a diploma.
“Our mission is to provide a rigorous and personalized education in a highly interactive virtual learning environment,” the school states. “As an alternative school, we are dedicated to educating all Arizona students seeking an accredited high school diploma while engaging students who are credit deficient. Our vision is to prepare every student to become college and career-ready by providing a highly personalized education.”
The Next Steps
Primavera has maintained positive oversight from state and authorizing bodies throughout its 25-year history, adapting its academic model as accountability standards have evolved. Following the board’s January decision, the school stated its intention to continue working closely with state leaders to ensure alignment with all regulatory requirements and to strengthen academic outcomes for Arizona families.
The board’s willingness to apply alternative school performance standards retroactively reflects a broader recognition that accountability frameworks must account for the realities of non-traditional student populations in order to produce accurate assessments. For Primavera, the result is a clarified academic record and an official standing that reflects what the school says it has always delivered.
