Tropical Depression Likely to Form in Central Atlantic Over Next 48 Hours: NHC Report

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical waves in the Atlantic, including one that has an 80 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression.

As of 2 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, showers and thunderstorms associated with Invest AL92 had become better organized. The tropical wave was located roughly midway between the Lesser Antilles and the west coast of Africa.

Environmental conditions are expected to remain favorable for additional development during the next day or so, and forecasters said a tropical depression will likely form as the system moves west to west-northwest across the central tropical Atlantic.

However, upper-level winds are expected to become too strong for further development beginning Friday as AL92 approaches the Lesser Antilles.

The system has an 80 percent chance of formation during the next 48 hours and an 80 percent chance through the next seven days.

Farther east, the National Hurricane Center is also monitoring Invest AL94, a tropical wave located several hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands.

The system is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, but environmental conditions are forecast to be generally favorable for some development.

A tropical depression could form late this week or during the weekend as the wave moves west or west-northwest across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.

AL94 has a 30 percent chance of development during the next 48 hours and a 50 percent chance through the next seven days.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center continues to issue advisories on Tropical Storm Cristobal, which is located over the Atlantic Ocean well west of the Azores.

Residents and visitors across Florida and the Caribbean should continue monitoring updates from the National Hurricane Center as the systems move across the Atlantic.
