BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is remembering fallen deputy Barbara Pill, who was killed in the line of duty on March 6, 2012, while serving the citizens of Brevard County.
Deputy Pill, a respected member of the agency and a veteran of law enforcement, is honored each year for her dedication, courage and sacrifice.
Colleagues, family members and members of the community continue to reflect on her legacy more than a decade after her death.
Born in Miami in 1959, Pill began her career in law enforcement in 1980 as a civilian employee with the Metro-Dade Police Department. She spent 16 years in various roles before joining the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in 1997. In May 2002, she fulfilled a lifelong goal when she became a sworn deputy.
During her time with BCSO, Pill served in multiple roles, including patrol deputy, field training officer and criminal investigator. She was widely known for her commitment to helping others, particularly at-risk children and elderly residents who had been victims of crime.
On March 6, 2012, Deputy Pill was conducting a traffic stop connected to a burglary investigation near John Rodes Boulevard and Elena Way in Melbourne when she was shot and killed.
Authorities later said the suspect opened fire during the stop, taking the life of the 52-year-old deputy.
Pill had served in law enforcement for approximately three decades. She is survived by her husband, Steve, and their two sons.
Her sacrifice continues to be honored locally and statewide. Her name has been added to law enforcement memorials recognizing officers who died in the line of duty, ensuring her service will not be forgotten.
Today, members of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the community pause to remember Deputy Barbara Pill — a dedicated public servant who gave her life protecting others. Her legacy of service and commitment remains a lasting part of Brevard County’s law enforcement history.
