BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay Police addressed the death investigation that began on Monday when a woman allegedly shot at officers when they responded to a complaint about loud music.
Below is a summary by Palm Bay Police:
“It is important to note that this is still an active investigation and information provided is a summarized version of events based off preliminary investigation.
On March 23rd, 2026, around 2:58pm, our communications center received an anonymous phone call reference loud music in the 800 block of Serenade Street Northwest. At 3:40pm, we received another anonymous phone call, again regarding loud music.
While our officers were responding to the area and at approximately 3:58pm, we received a separate call advising a female fired off multiple rounds from her residence, located at 859 Serenade Street Northwest. The female has been identified as 53-year-old Kamla Grimmer.
As officers arrived on scene, they quickly established a contact team and began making announcements via their vehicle’s public address system. During that time, and around 4:17pm, Kamla began shooting from her residence. Initially, she shot out the rear of the residence towards the canal, where officers were staged on a perimeter. At this time, our communications center sent out a “Code Red” or “Reverse 911” to our community asking them to shelter indoors.
At 4:35pm, we were able to establish phone contact with Kamla, where attempts for her to peacefully surrender were made.
At 4:43pm, she opened the front door to the residence, fired shots, and quickly retreated into the residence. Our SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Team were activated. Up to this point, our officers did not return fire. Our officers were again able to establish phone contact with her in hopes of a peaceful resolution.
Around 5:13pm, members from our SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team began to arrive on scene. At 6:06pm, Kamla stood concealed in the doorway of the residence. At 6:09pm, she opened fire towards our SWAT Team, who returned fire. She immediately retreated into the residence, and it was not immediately clear if she was injured. Around 6:15pm, our SWAT Team deployed gas into the residence. Phone communication remained ongoing between Kamla and our Crisis Negotiation Team where efforts of a peaceful resolution continued.
At 6:53pm, more gas was deployed into the residence. At 7:08pm, Kamla again shot at our officers, who returned fire. After seeing no movement, officers were able to deploy a drone inside of the residence, where she was discovered to be immobile. At 7:17pm our SWAT Team along with SWAT Medics made entry into the residence, where Kamla was pronounced deceased on scene. There were no injuries to officers, or citizens. There was never a hostage situation, as some rumors on social media suggest.
As standard protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement responded, and will serve as the lead investigating agency. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit will be assisting them in their investigation. The preliminary investigation suggests the female was deceased by return fire from our officers. The officers involved are on paid administrative leave.
There is no substantial history that would have led investigators to believe something to this extent would have occurred.
Chief Augello stated, “We always pray for the best outcome where no life is lost. Our officers attempted every scenario possible to avoid a loss of life and showed great restraint during this incident. Unfortunately, after their lives, as well as those in our community were placed in immediate threat of deadly force by active gunfire, they were left with no other option but to return fire.”
