Rockledge Man Killed After Being Struck by SUV on Murrell Road in Viera

A 58-year-old Rockledge man died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle while lying in the roadway early Monday on Murrell Road in Viera, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — A 58-year-old Rockledge man died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle while lying in the roadway early Monday on Murrell Road near Irongate Drive in Viera, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a 2015 GMC Acadia was traveling southbound on Murrell Road, just north of Iron Gate Drive, in the outside lane when the driver encountered the man lying in the roadway between the inside and outside southbound travel lanes.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver attempted to swerve to avoid the man but was unable to do so. The undercarriage of the GMC Acadia struck the pedestrian.

The driver was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

The pedestrian, identified only as a 58-year-old Rockledge man, was transported to Viera Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding why the man was in the roadway have not yet been released. The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
