Brevard Volleyball Preview: Merritt Island Leads a Deep Field Entering 2026 Season
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — With the 2026 high school volleyball season here, teams across Brevard County are preparing for another competitive campaign.
The county features a mix of established programs, rising contenders, and teams looking to make a significant jump.
Among them, the Merritt Island Mustangs enter the season as one of the area’s premier programs after coming within one set of a state championship in 2025.
Here is a look at several of Brevard’s top programs and what could be ahead in 2026.
Merritt Island Mustangs — 2025: 29-3
The Mustangs continued their run as one of Florida’s premier volleyball programs in 2025, finishing 29-3 and coming within one set of a state championship.
Merritt Island will have to replace several key seniors, but the program returns significant talent from last year’s roster, including players who were sophomores and juniors in 2025.
With a strong returning core and a program accustomed to playing deep into the postseason, Merritt Island enters 2026 with another opportunity to contend for a state title.
Prediction: State Champions
Astronaut War Eagles — 2025: 20-8
Astronaut was one of Brevard’s biggest turnaround stories last season.
After finishing 6-17 in 2024, the War Eagles exploded to a 20-8 record in 2025. That improvement has raised expectations heading into the new season.
Astronaut will be guided by considerable senior leadership and experience. If the War Eagles can build on last year’s breakthrough, they could be in position to make another postseason run.
Prediction: District Champions
Viera Hawks — 2025: 12-16
Viera endured a difficult 2025 campaign, finishing 12-16 after a more competitive 2024 season.
The good news for the Hawks is that much of last year’s roster was young. That experience could pay dividends in 2026 as Viera looks to regain its footing and turn close matches into victories.

Satellite Scorpions — 2025: 16-10
Satellite has long been known for its success in beach volleyball, but the Scorpions’ indoor program has also been a consistent presence in Brevard.
The biggest obstacle remains familiar: Merritt Island. With the Mustangs in the same district, Satellite has repeatedly had to contend with one of the county’s strongest programs.
A postseason run is within reach, but getting past Merritt Island could determine just how far the Scorpions go.

Holy Trinity Tigers — 2025: 17-9
Holy Trinity put together a strong 2025 season, winning a district championship before advancing to the regional finals.
The Tigers and Edgewood have developed into a competitive pairing in District 10, with Holy Trinity getting the edge last season.
Although Holy Trinity lost several seniors to graduation, the program returns experienced players and should have another opportunity to make a deep postseason run.
Prediction: Regional Finals
Edgewood Red Wolves — 2025: 18-5
Edgewood improved by three wins from 2024 and finished 18-5 last season.
Even more impressive, the Red Wolves’ only losses came against Merritt Island and Holy Trinity. While Edgewood must replace some graduated contributors, the program returns production from its sophomore and junior classes.
If those returning players take another step forward, Edgewood could again be a difficult matchup.

Rockledge Raiders — 2025: 11-16
Rockledge finished below .500 last season but improved by six wins from the previous year.
The Raiders compete in a challenging district where simply reaching the postseason can be difficult. To create a path in 2026, Rockledge may need to produce an upset or two against established programs such as Satellite or Merritt Island.

Melbourne Bulldogs — 2025: 14-12
Melbourne opened last season with a 6-0 record and stood at 7-3 after its first 10 matches before struggling down the stretch.
The Bulldogs ultimately saw their season end in the district tournament. Melbourne also graduated significant senior experience, making this a potentially important development season for a young roster.
Prediction: District Quarterfinals
Cocoa Beach Minutemen — 2025: 8-17
Cocoa Beach took a step back in the win column last season after losing considerable senior experience from its 2024 team.
Still, the Minutemen remained competitive within their district and played a challenging schedule while earning a postseason berth. With another year of experience for a young roster, Cocoa Beach could be positioned to improve in 2026.
Prediction: Regional Semifinals
Bayside Bears — 2025: 9-17
Bayside finished 9-17 last season but continued a trend of taking on challenging competition.
The Bears defeated Heritage twice during the regular season before falling to the Panthers when the district tournament arrived. That result should provide plenty of motivation heading into 2026.
Bayside will have an opportunity to turn those regular-season wins into postseason success this year.

Space Coast Vipers — 2025: 8-18
Space Coast struggled to find consistent success last season but remains close to Cocoa Beach in the battle for postseason positioning.
Astronaut appears to be the team to beat in the district, but the Vipers have an opportunity to change the picture with an upset or two.

Titusville Terriers — 2025: 12-11
Titusville finished 12-11 last season and enters 2026 looking to take the next step.
The Terriers will rely heavily on younger players, particularly sophomores and juniors, to navigate a challenging schedule. If those players develop quickly, Titusville could surprise some opponents.

Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers — 2025: 7-19
MCC continues to search for a return to its past heights.
The Hustlers’ last winning season came in 2014, when they went 24-6 and reached the state championship. Rebuilding in a county with as much volleyball competition as Brevard is no easy task, but continued development could provide a foundation for future success.
Prediction: District Quarterfinals
Palm Bay Pirates — 2025: 4-13
Palm Bay has struggled to gain momentum in recent seasons and enters 2026 looking to build from the ground up.
The Pirates face a difficult district and will likely need to produce several unexpected victories to put themselves in postseason contention. For Palm Bay, incremental improvement could be the most important objective.

Heritage Panthers — 2025: 15-8
Heritage made a noticeable jump in 2025, improving from 12-10 in 2024 to 15-8.
A deep junior class helped drive that improvement, and those players now enter the season with another year of experience. Heritage finished last in its district tournament a season ago, but the Panthers have the opportunity to make a bigger push this year.

Eau Gallie Commodores — 2025: 6-15
Eau Gallie has been searching for a breakthrough season for nearly a decade.
The Commodores have generally hovered around the five- or six-win mark in recent years, making consistency and development major priorities entering 2026.
Without a clear favorite in the way, Eau Gallie will need to find opportunities for key wins if it hopes to challenge for a district title.

Cocoa Tigers — 2025: 3-17
Cocoa finished 3-17 last season and continues to look for a turnaround.
The Tigers’ last winning season came in 2022. Rather than looking too far ahead, Cocoa’s immediate challenge will be to build confidence, improve from last year’s record, and take the season one match at a time.
Prediction: District Quarterfinals
West Shore Wildcats — 2025: 9-11
West Shore’s 2025 season was filled with momentum swings.
The Wildcats opened 4-1 and went through several winning and losing streaks throughout the campaign. They finished the regular season with wins in three of their final four matches before running into Edgewood in the district tournament.
That matchup could be a major test again in 2026.

Brevard HEAT Fireworks — 2025: 22-6
The Brevard HEAT remain one of the county’s most successful programs and have been knocking on the door of another state championship appearance.
The HEAT reached the Final Four in 2024 and followed that with a run to the regional finals in 2025. Although the team lost several seniors, considerable talent is still returning to the roster.
Another deep postseason run would come as little surprise.

A County Full of Storylines
From Merritt Island’s pursuit of another state championship to Astronaut’s continued rise and the ongoing battles among programs such as Satellite, Holy Trinity and Edgewood, the 2026 season has plenty of intriguing storylines.
Several teams will enter the year with established expectations, while others will be looking to prove that last season’s struggles are behind them.
The biggest question may be whether anyone in Brevard can knock Merritt Island from the top of the county’s volleyball landscape.
One thing is certain: once the season begins, there will be plenty to watch.
