OBITUARY: Merritt Island Community Leader Jack Ratterman Passed Away June 15

Long-time Merritt Island community leader, Jack Ratterman, passed away on June 15 after suffering a heart attack followed by complications. Jack was a lifelong Merritt Islander who actively supported the community, was a retired history teacher, and owned a tree-trimming business.

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Long-time Merritt Island community leader, Jack Ratterman, passed away on June 15 after suffering a heart attack followed by complications.

Known throughout the community for his dynamic personality, he will be missed by many.

Jack was a lifelong Merritt Islander who actively supported the community, was a retired history teacher, and owned a tree-trimming business.

He devoted his time and talents by serving on the North Merritt Island Homeowners Association board as president, vice president, and district representative for 20 years.

He also served on the North Merritt Island Dependent Special District, which reviews North Merritt Island zoning, and the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency, as well as other community organizations.

Jack spearheaded the effort to establish the Pioneer Trail from Chase Hammock to Hall Road. He was a strong advocate for the unhoused, property rights and providing resources for local youth.

A funeral mass will be held for Jack on Tuesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 1940 N. Courtenay Pkwy, Merritt Island. A reception will follow in the Social Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any homeless support charity in his memory.
