BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — Brevard County Fire Rescue’s Station 41’s B-shift crew was recently presented with the Extra Mile Award by Assistant Chief Luisi and District Chief Gardiner for going above and beyond the call of duty.
The recognition follows a moment when the crew respectfully retrieved and cared for an American flag that had been blown to the ground during the storm.
The flag belonged to Lieutenant Don Schrier of the Cape Canaveral Fire Department. His home surveillance system alerted him to movement outside, and the footage showed the BCFR team stopping in front of his home, carefully picking up the fallen flag and securing it.
Lt. Schrier later expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you for the respect of the American flag and the care of my property.”

The crew’s actions, seemingly small amid emergency response efforts, spoke volumes about the pride and integrity that define BCFR’s service to the community.
“Excellent work, Station 41 B-shift,” BCFR stated in a public acknowledgment. “It’s these moments that reveal the true heart of our firefighters.”
In a world where first responders are constantly navigating high-pressure situations, it’s often gestures like these that leave the most lasting impressions. BCFR’s Station 41 B-shift showed not only professionalism and patriotism but also the deep respect they hold for the communities they serve.
