I-95 Closed After Plane Touches Down in Cocoa

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA — A small airplane carrying two people was forced to make an emergency landing Monday evening along Interstate 95 in Cocoa, bringing rush-hour traffic to a halt and leaving one person injured, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue.
The aircraft touched down around 5:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 just south of State Road 520, near mile marker 201.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and treated one individual for injuries sustained during the landing. That person’s condition was not released.
The second occupant was not reported to be injured. Authorities did not immediately identify those on board or disclose what may have caused the emergency landing.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers shut down portions of the interstate while firefighters and paramedics worked at the scene, and investigators secured the area. Traffic was backed up for several miles as crews assessed the plane and cleared the roadway.
FHP troopers are leading the investigation, and federal aviation officials were expected to be notified to determine what went wrong in the air and review the aircraft’s condition.
Witnesses described seeing the plane descend toward the highway moments before touching down amid moving traffic, narrowly avoiding vehicles as it came to a stop.
No motorists were reported hurt in the incident. Officials said additional details would be released as the investigation continues.
