WATCH: The night was calm over Washington, D.C., until a streak of fire tore through the sky. Witnesses near the Potomac River gasped as two sets of aircraft lights merged into a blinding explosion, sending shockwaves of fear across the city.
WASHINGTON DC – Flights in and out of Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington DC have been halted following reports of a midair collision between a plane carrying 60 passengers and a helicopter at around 9.30 p.m. ET on Wednesday night.
An American Airlines flight from Kansas went down in the Potomac River near Reagan Airport after colliding with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, officials said.
Emergency responders flooded the scene. Firetrucks, ambulances, and police vehicles lined the streets leading to the river, their sirens wailing. Overhead, helicopters from the U.S. Park Police, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, and even the military circled, scanning the wreckage below.
Searchlights cut through the darkness, illuminating debris that floated on the water’s surface.
From the Kennedy Center, an observation camera had captured the chilling moment—two sets of lights, moving toward each other, then suddenly engulfed in fire.
The footage was quickly making rounds, raising questions and fueling speculation.
