BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — A late-night rollover crash at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Valkaria Road claimed the life of a 27-year-old passenger from Palm Bay, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 11:29 p.m. on Dec. 13.

Investigators said a 2014 Hyundai Tucson was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 just south of Valkaria Road in the outside lane when the vehicle veered left and struck a raised curbed median.

As a result of the impact, the SUV’s left front tire came off the rim. The vehicle continued northwest across the grass median and entered the inside southbound lane.

The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Palm Bay, attempted to correct the vehicle and reenter the northbound lanes but was unable to regain control.

The Hyundai continued northeast, striking a raised grass median and a plastic pole before hitting the edge of the pavement and beginning to overturn. During the rollover, the passenger was ejected from the vehicle, investigators said.

Both the driver and passenger were transported to Palm Bay Hospital, where the passenger was later pronounced dead.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to FHP. The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.

The incident remains under active investigation.
