Brevard Public Schools is recommending the termination of Dan Bennett, a teacher at Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School and former president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers (BFT).

BPS district officials said the president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers, Anthony Colucci, initially asked the district to allow Bennett to quietly retire without facing disciplinary consequences.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Brevard Public Schools is recommending the termination of a teacher at Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School, following allegations that he failed to report a serious student incident that occurred while he was supervising them.

According to a district statement released Friday, Dan Bennett, a teacher at the school and former president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers (BFT), is accused of failing to report an incident in which two students engaged in oral sex in September 2025 while under his supervision.

District officials said Bennett allegedly did not notify school administrators or law enforcement after learning of the incident, despite legal and district policies requiring such reports.

Brevard Public Schools said it became aware of the incident only recently.

“Brevard Public Schools learned of this incident just last week,” the district said in the statement.

The district is recommending that Bennett be terminated and suspended without pay.

The matter is scheduled to go before the Brevard County School Board on March 10, when board members will consider the disciplinary action.

According to a Brevard Public Schools statement released Friday, Dan Bennett, a teacher at the school and former president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers, is accused of failing to report an incident in which two students engaged in oral sex in September 2025 while under his supervision.

The district also criticized the current BFT leadership for challenging the proposed discipline. According to the statement, Anthony Colucci, president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers, is using union dues to oppose the district’s recommendation.

District officials said Colucci initially asked the district to allow Bennett to quietly retire without facing disciplinary consequences.

“Throughout this process, Brevard Public Schools has maintained that student safety and accountability must come before shielding adults from consequences,” the district said.

The case will be formally reviewed at the upcoming school board meeting, where members will decide whether to uphold the district’s recommendation to terminate Bennett.
