BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Students from across Brevard Public Schools put their skills to the ultimate test during the first-ever Districtwide Design & Conquer Construction Competition, hosted at Viera High School.

For the first time in district history, students representing Astronaut High School, Cocoa High School, Palm Bay Magnet High School, Viera High School, Heritage High School, and Space Coast Junior/Senior High School came together for a high-energy, two-hour timed build challenge designed to mirror real-world workforce demands.

Upon arrival, students were assigned to mixed-school teams, with many meeting their teammates for the first time just moments before the competition began.

Each team combined expertise from multiple Career and Technical Education (CTE) trades, including construction and carpentry, electrical engineering, and HVAC.

The format encouraged collaboration, communication, and problem-solving under pressure — just like on an actual job site.

Once the clock started, teams raced to complete a series of complex construction tasks within two hours. Competitors framed two 4-foot by 6-foot walls and secured them in an L-shape configuration. They then rough-framed window and door openings, installed drywall, added functional electrical components, and mounted a mini-split HVAC unit — all while working live in front of industry professionals.

Projects were judged on accuracy, craftsmanship, safety, and overall professionalism. Beyond technical ability, students were evaluated on teamwork and their ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment.

District leaders said the event highlighted the strength of Brevard Public Schools’ career and technical programs while giving students valuable, hands-on experience that directly connects to workforce opportunities.

Organizers plan to make the Design & Conquer Construction Competition an annual event, continuing to showcase the talent, grit, and future-ready skills of Brevard’s next generation of builders.
