Tropical Storm Dolly Nearing Leeward Islands as Hurricane Season Approaches Peak Season
Forecasters expect little change in strength during the next 48 hours
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Tropical Storm Dolly continues moving rapidly westward across the Atlantic Ocean and could approach the Leeward Islands this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.
As of 5 p.m. ET, the center of Dolly is moving west at approximately 24 mph, a motion expected to continue during the next couple of days.
Maximum sustained winds remained near 40 mph, with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extended outward up to 60 miles from the storm’s center.
Forecasters expect little change in strength during the next 48 hours.
Dolly is forecast to weaken into a tropical wave before reaching the Leeward Islands.
No coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect, but residents and visitors in the Leeward Islands should closely monitor the system’s progress.
Heavy rainfall associated with Dolly could begin affecting the Leeward Islands late Saturday and continue into Sunday.
The rain is expected to spread into the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Hispaniola on Sunday and Monday.
The National Hurricane Center warned that heavy rain could produce flash flooding, particularly across mountainous and other higher-terrain areas of the Leeward Islands.
