BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot Thursday night near Covina Street in the Port St. John area at around 10 p.m., according to Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

The Deputy, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.

Sheriff Ivey said during a press conference that Sheriff’s Agents were conducting a joint investigation with the Titusville Police Department at a house on Covina Street in connection with complaints about prostitution.

Sheriff Ivey said that a male suspect opened fire on the Deputies as they attempted to serve a warrant to arrest a woman at the house on prostitution charges.

Sheriff’s Deputies then returned fire and shot the suspect, who was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Sheriff Ivey said a woman was taken into custody.

“We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers as we go through the night,” Sheriff Ivey said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also investigating the incident.

“Late yesterday evening a member of our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office family was shot in the line of duty while he and the members of his unit were attempting to make an arrest in the Port St. John area,” said Sheriff Ivey.
