BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s Office released information Wednesday afternoon about a Brevard County Jail inmate who died after suffering an apparent medical event during his booking procedure on Sunday.

The inmate was pronounced dead on Monday and has been identified Gregory Edwards, 38, from Valkaria.

Authorities say Edwards was arrested on Sunday by the West Melbourne Police Department for charges of battery, violation of probation, and resisting arrest with violence.

West Melbourne Police responded to a call on Sunday that Edwards had battered a worker who was placing toys in a truck for a children’s charity, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Police say Edwards began acting erratic and became combative with officers during the arrest and booking process.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating Edwards death.

A spokesperson with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office says, “the investigation to date has identified a previous inhalant use/abuse as a possible cause of the medical event.”
