Mercedes Homes Ceases Operations

A Mercedes home is listed for sale in the Montecito subdivision in Satellite Beach.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A prominent local builder that is headquartered in Melbourne is out of business.

Mercedes Homes announced March 9 that it has closed for good and will sell off its remaining assets.

Mercedes Homes was founded in Brevard County in 1983.

At one time the company was one of the most visible builders in America, constructing homes in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and in Florida.

Florida developments under the Mercedes banner are in Tampa, Jacksonville, Daytona, Orlando and a number of sites in Brevard.

Current Brevard locations include housing tracts in Titusville, Cocoa, Rockledge, Palm Shores, Melbourne and Satellite Beach,

Homes under construction will be completed, Mercedes officials said.

Since its inception in 1983, Mercedes Homes has built more than 20,000 residences and as recently as 2007, was listed among the top-30 home builders in America by the national BUILDER 100 ratings agency.

The company was founded by Howard Buescher and named after his wife, Mercedes.

In January 2009 Mercedes Homes filed for bankruptcy, citing between 5,000 and 10,0000 creditors.
