System is expected to move slowly before possibly turning southward over the subtropical Atlantic
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a low-pressure system in the central subtropical Atlantic that could develop into a tropical depression during the next day or two.
The system, designated AL98, was located approximately 350 miles east of Bermuda, where its associated showers and thunderstorms have shown little change in organization over the past several hours.
Forecasters said environmental conditions could support gradual development as the system moves slowly through the region.
AL98 could turn southward over the subtropical Atlantic on Friday. By Sunday, however, conditions are expected to become less favorable for further development.
The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 40 percent chance of formation through the next 48 hours and a 40 percent chance during the next seven days.
The system currently poses no immediate threat to Florida, but residents should continue monitoring official tropical weather updates as the forecast develops.
