Hurst Inches Closer To First Pro Golf Title

GLADSTONE, N.J. – Melbourne’s own Vicky Hurst outlasted USA favorites Paula Creamer, Brittany Linicome and Michelle Wie in the first round of the Sybase Match Play Championship on Thursday.

Playing for the United States, Hurst defeated Meena Lee of South Korea, 2 and 1.

Hurst met a a strong opponent Friday and a USA favorite No. 5, Cristie Kerr.

It was a close match as Hurst took the lead after the 2nd hole, only to relinquish that lead on the 4th and then to go 1-down on the 8th.

She battled from 1-down to go even on the 15th hole with a birdie and then went on to defeat Kerr on the 19th hole (first playoff hole) to advance in the championships.

Some 64 of the LPGA Tour’s players began play in the Sybase Match Play Championships Thursday.

Third round play begins Saturday with just 16 players remaining for weekend play.

Hurst has been close to victory on the LPGA Tour several times.

Since 2008, she has recorded five top-10 finishes, including a second place finish at the 2010 LPGA Hana Bank Championship.
