BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – A shootout early this morning in Titusville ended with the death of a cab passenger, according to police.
Detectives said gunfire was reported near the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Whispering Hills Road about 1:55 a.m. today.
Arriving at the scene, police found a Global Cab driver that had exchanged shots with a passenger, Marize Simone Brooks, 19, who had died after being struck by bullets.
The cab driver told police he picked up a passenger off Deleon Avenue and was instructed to drop the man on Mockingbird Lane, near where the shooting occurred.
Police said the cab driver reported that an argument ensued and the taxi driver was shot in back of the head. The cab driver then returned fire with his own gun, fatally wounding the passenger.
The cab driver was somehow able to dial 911 and was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.
Police are attempting to verify what happened and are continuing to investigate the shooting, but said at this point they do not have any reason to suspect the taxi driver was not being truthful in his account of the situation.
