Advance To World Finals In Spain

BREVARD COUNTY • ROCKLEDGE, FLORIDA – It wasn’t easy and at times it may have seemed like an impossible feat to accomplish, but in the end, it was all worth the effort.

Three teams from the Space Coast IcePlex traveled to Strongsville, Ohio last weekend to compete at the U.S. Figure Skating National Theatre on Ice National Championships and each one exceeded expectations.

The IcePlex’s Adult team, known as the “Frozen Hurricanes,” and the Novice team “Hurricanes” captured first place in both the short and long programs in their divisions to claim national championships.

The IcePlex’s Novice Theatre on Ice Team is made up of 28 youth skaters. For their competition, they skated two programs including a choreographic exercise to music that had to do with changes in the weather and a freeskate in Peter Pan costumes.

One of the skaters on the Novice team is 9-year-old Madeline Warren of Rockledge.

This was her first year on the competitive team after skating with the Intro to Theatre on Ice squad.

In Costume

At nationals, Madeline, who just completed the fourth grade at Jupiter Elementary School, was dressed as a “Lost Boy” while competing in the Peter Pan freeskate.

She will attend Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School this fall and her future plans are to become a professional skater or an author.

“Madeline has been skating since she was 3,” said her mother, Tonia Warren, who also competed at nationals as a member of the winning IcePlex Adult team. “She enjoys writing and journaling and competing in individual skating competitions as well. She placed first, fifth and third at the Florida Open in Orlando this April.”

Another IcePlex squad, its senior team, finished fifth overall in only its second appearance at this level of competition.

“One of the principal skaters on the senior team had returned to the ice only the previous week because of an ankle injury and unfortunately took a tumble down a narrow staircase during event preparation,” Warren said. “But she valiantly took to the ice anyhow, as ‘the show must go on.’”

Next Up

Many members of the senior team paved the way for the other IcePlex teams’ successes this year when as competitors at the Junior level they were reigning national champions several years in a row.

The IcePlex’s Adult and Novice teams will now represent the United States next spring in Spain at the “Nation’s Cup,” the World Figure Skating’s 2013 championships.

“We will be working very hard to find business sponsors to assist with the heavy costs to participate in the World competition,” Warren said.

Along with guiding teams to the national titles in Ohio, IcePlex Head Coach Katie Nyman was awarded the Silver Medal for best adaptation of a known story for her choreography of the Adult free skate program “The Tudors.”
