ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — It is that time of the baseball season, when eyeballs linger a little longer on the scoreboard, and Rays outfielder Sam Fuld is no different from the average fan.

“It seems that every game on that scoreboard matters now, especially to us, so yeah, we watch,” Fuld said. “I know I watch. We’re not just gunning to make the playoffs. We’re gunning to win the division.”

Far-fetched? Not anymore. Not with the way this season is going, and certainly not after the way last season ended.

The heat of this summer’s sudden pennant race has evaporated the Yankees’ 10-game lead in the American League East. They entered Wednesday night tied with the Orioles for first place in the division and exited with a one-game cushion, after they beat Tampa Bay, 6-4, and Baltimore lost to Toronto by the same score.
