BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Cape Canaveral Fire Rescue transported a child in distress to Cape Canaveral Hospital this afternoon after bringing him to shore from Ski Island near Port Canaveral.

Fire Chief Dave Sargeant of Cape Canaveral Fire Rescue said firefighters took a boat to Ski Island on the Banana River about 2:10 p.m. this afternoon after receiving a call that a 4-year-old boy was in need of help.

“Apparently a family was boating out there and the little boy was boogie boarding,” Sargeant said.

The child’s mother reported that she had taken her eyes off the boy for just seconds when the child apparently went under the water.

Firefighters brought the child to the marina from Ski Island and performed CPR on him.

The boy was taken to Cape Canaveral Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The name of the victim has not been released.
