BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College women’s volleyball team defeated No. 4 Daytona State College in five sets Saturday afternoon at Titan Field House.
The Titans, now 4-2 in the Citrus Conference, have swept the regular-season series with the Falcons.
“It is a rivalry, and I give a shoutout to my team; they stepped up when the game was on the line. The mentality and mindset were positive; they believed they could win, and it was a good team win,” Eastern Florida State College women’s volleyball coach Melito Eleutiza said.
The teams split the first four sets: Daytona State College won the first set 25-20, then the Titans tied it up 25-22 before the Falcons won the third 25-20 and the Titans tied it 25-20 to send the match to the fifth set. The Titans won the fifth set.
The first set was tied 18-18 before the Falcons pulled away to win 25-20.
Down 1-0, sophomores Madelynne Daugherty and Leyre Arroyo Sanchez seemed to take over, and Daugherty’s back-to-back kills gave the Titans a 14-10 lead.
A Diara Gaye block gave the Titans a 22-18 lead, but the Falcons ran it back and cut the lead to 23-22. Once again, Daugherty had a big kill, and then a Titans block tied it 1-1.
The Falcons took a four-point lead halfway through the third set, and while the Titans closed the gap, Daytona State College once again took the lead to win the third 25-20.
The fourth set was tight, with the teams tied seven times, the final time on an Emmie Dayton block. Another block by Gaye made it 20-19, and the Titans went on to win the set 25-20 to force a fifth set.
Sanchez had a couple of big kills to give the Titans an early advantage, and then after Daytona State College had cut it to an 8-7 lead, Jada Zimmerman came up with a big kill to keep the Titans out front and would end the match with one final kill to give the Titans the victory.
Arroyo Sanchez finished with 15 kills while Zimmerman had 14 in the win. Daugherty finished with a career-high 12 kills. Daniela Eylerts had 10 digs.
“The win put us in a good situation in the conference; we are looking for the second or third seed, and the girls are focused on that goal,” Eleutiza said.
“I don’t think our record reflects the type of team that we have, but you know what, we are doing it in conference when it matters the most. I am proud of them.”
Eastern Florida State College will be on the road for a couple of matches next week, traveling to No. 1 Miami Dade College on Wednesday evening and then traveling to Santa Fe College next Saturday.
