Two teams from Brevard County (Merritt Island Pee Wees and Palm Bay Midgets) won conference titles in New Smyrna Beach and advanced in the Pop Warner playoffs.

East Coast Pop Warner Commissioner Ricky Barnett said he was pleased with Pop Warner’s implementation of new rules this season about concussions.

“Pop Warner in the off season had a very aggressive program. They got a group of doctors together and basically put together a concussion package,” Barnett said. “Each child is evaluated and we ask specific questions before the season, if they have ever had any concussion issues and if during games there is not any questioning whatsoever.

“A parent cannot put a child back in the game, a coach cannot put a child back in the game, if there is a question the only person who can put a child back in a football game or cheer squad is a doctor,” Barnett said.

Five programs from Brevard County compete in Pop Warner’s East Cast Conference including the North Brevard Hawks, Merritt Island Mustangs, Cocoa Tigers, Palm Bay Rockets and the Space Coast Vipers.
