Space Coast Karate Students Earn Black Belts

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Sixteen Brevard karate students – kids and adults – participated in a series of tests stipulated by the World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-Do Association (WMKA) based in Okinawa, Japan.

These tests included Kata (Forms), Yakasoku Kumite (Sparring) and Tameshiwari (brcik/board breaking). All students who participated passed the requirements set for their level by the WMKA.

The testing was done at the Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness Center, the home dojo of Cocoa Beach Karate.

Of particular note, three teenagers were promoted to black belts. Charlie Williams (17) tested and passed his testing for Shodan, adult black belt, 1st degree. Two Junior black belts were also promoted, Joshua Adams (15) and Gannon Avery (12).

In addition, 12 other students were promoted. Black Tips: Jace Wesely, Jamieson Dettmer, Nick Davidson, Jordan Tomberlin, Jeff Tomberlin. Brown Tips: Aiden Adams, Stephanie Douglas. Green Belt/Tips: Zachary Douglas. Green Tips: Cloe DeCioccio, Bill Stanley, Brittany Stanley, Abigail Tomberlin, and Heather Motro.

The testing was judged by seven high ranking local WMKA black belts including Des Chaskelson (5th Dan), Phil Collins (4th Dan), Thomas DuJardin (4th Dan), Joe Motro (2nd Dan), Mike Kelley (2nd Dan), Jean Chipman (1st Dan) and Stu Warren (1st Dan).
