BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA –Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness recently hosted a free self-defense seminar for women conducted by 5th degree black belt Sensei Des Chaskelson and the Cocoa Beach Karate students.

Over 50 women showed up to learn the basics of assault prevention strategies and self defense tactics and techniques.

Due to space limitations, the event was fully booked 10 days prior to the seminar, which indicates the strong demand for events such as this. Based on the success of this event, more events are being planned.

Sensei Des Chaskelson said, “Many of these dangerous situations can be avoided and we provide information and strategies on how to avoid danger and conflict before it arises, as well as basic techniques to use and targets to aim at if there is no option but to fight back.”

The seminar imparted a lot of information on assault prevention as well as teaching basic techniques and target areas to strike. The participants were shown and then practiced basic punches, knife hand strikes, elbow strikes, head butts, knee strikes and kicks as well as basic blocks.

Students at Cocoa Beach Karate, led by Sensei Chaskelson, demonstrated the techniques and assisted with the teaching and practice.

Cocoa Beach Karate is a member of the World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-do Association (WMKA) based in Okinawa, Japan, the birthplace of modern day karate.

The school offers karate to kids, teens and adults at two locations, Cocoa Beach Health & Fitness as well as the City of Cocoa Beach Recreation Center. Beginners are always welcome.
