Brevard Hosts America’s Best Soccer Teams

Women's National Championship Starts Monday

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The combined records of the 12 teams that will participate in the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women’s National Championship Soccer Tournament on Eastern Florida State College’s Melbourne Campus certainly tell a story.

The teams recorded a total of 200 victories, 25 defeats and five ties.

“Given that level of excellence the tournament should be well and tightly played with a true champion emerging at the end,” said Eastern Florida Athletic Director and head women’s soccer coach Jeff Carr who also is tournament director.

“We’d love to see the soccer community and the Brevard County community at large come out and enjoy the competition.”

The tournament also is expected to draw a large number of coaches from four-year colleges and universities who will be looking to bolster their rosters from the abundance of talent on the participating teams.

Butler brings the nation’s top scorer in sophomore midfielder Morgan Foster who accounted for 43 goals in 23 games. She also is first in points with 102, first in shots in 139 and 10th in game-winning goals with six.

TEAMS RECORDED A TOTAL OF 200 VICTORIES

Darton sophomore forward Lyana Perez is third in goals with 38 and third in points with 88. Monroe College freshman forward Ana Caroline Martins Rodrigues is third in shots with 107. Butler freshman midfielder Madison Wedekind is second in assists with 20. Lake County sophomore midfielder Mariah Garcia is tied for fourth in assists with 19.

Paradise Valley sophomore midfielder Nicole Nsa is fourth in shots with 104 and second in penalty kicks going 3-for-3.

Butler and Iowa Western are first and second nationally in goals scored with 130 and 125 respectively, Butler’s coming in 23 games and Iowa Western’s in 19.

Darton, Lake County and Paradise Valley are fifth, sixth and seventh respectively with 97, 94 and 93.

Iowa Western and Darton are first and second in shots at 582 and 496 respectively. Eastern Florida is eighth at 359.

Defensively Lake County is second in team goals against average at 0.42 in 20 games. Iowa Western and Southern Maryland are tied for third at 0.47. Darton is eighth at 0.52.

Also, College of Lake County sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Knaack brings the nation’s top save percentage at .950. Knaack and Eastern Florida sophomore goalkeeper Katelyn Kern are tied for second nationally in goals allowed with three. Knaack also is second in goals against average at 0.21.

Competition begins with four pool play games at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday. Those games will be followed by four pool games at the same times on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The two semifinal games are scheduled for 5 and 8 p.m. Friday with the championship game set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Iowa Western Community College, 17-2, is the top seed followed by defending national champion Paradise Valley Community College (AZ), 20-1-1; Navarro College (TX), 16-3-1; Darton State College (GA), 20-1; Butler Community College (KS), 21-2; College of Southern Maryland, 17-1; Laramie County Community College (WY), 17-2-1; Monroe College (NY), 13-1; Owens Community College (OH), 17-2; host and 2012 runner-up Eastern Florida State College, 11-2-1; St. Louis Community College, 15-5-1; and the College of Lake County (IL), 16-3.

Iowa Western, a 2012 semifinalist, Navarro, which did not qualify in 2012, and Paradise all were ranked No. 1 nationally at different points in the 2013 season with Paradise Valley opening the season atop the table thanks to its 2012 national title.

• Tuesday, Nov. 19: Lake County vs. Monroe College 10 a.m; St Louis vs. Laramie County, 1 p.m.; Owens vs. Butler, 4 p.m.; Eastern Florida vs. College of Southern Maryland. 7 p.m.
• Wednesday Nov. 20: Monroe College vs. Iowa Western, 10 a.m.; Laramie County vs. Paradise Valley, 1 p.m.; Butler vs. Darton State, 4 p.m.; College of Southern Maryland vs. Navarro College, 7 p.m.

• Thursday, Nov. 21: day off.

• Friday Nov. 22: Semifinals: 5 and 8 p.m.

• Saturday, Nov: 23: National Championship Game: 7 p.m.
