Prescribed Burn Set For Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge

SET FOR Sunday south of State Road 402

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Fire staff will conduct a prescribed burn on Sunday, April 27, located south of State Road 402 and west of Peacock’s Pocket Rd.

SR 402 will be closed from the SR 402/406 intersection to the traffic light at SR 3.

This closure will include Peacock’s Pocket Road, East and West Gator Creek Road, Catfish Creek Loop Road and Oak and Palm Hammock trails. The closures may continue through Monday pending smoke and fog conditions.

The Refuge Visitor Information Center is closed on Sundays throughout the summer, however, if closures continue on Monday, the Visitor Center will also be affected.

All attempts will be made to keep Canaveral National Seashore beach access available via SR 406 and SR 3, however, visitors should be prepared for further closures.
