Bartlett Mainstay In the Panther Infield, Started All 45 Games

BASEBALL — The Florida Tech Panthers received some welcome news Thursday afternoon, as senior Andrew Bartlett was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team for NCAA Division II District 5.

The Capital One Academic All-District Teams are voted on by sports information directors in each district.

A native of Ocala, Fla., Bartlett has been a mainstay in the Panthers’ infield. He has started all 45 games so far this season, and has recorded a .324 batting average.

Bartlett is second on the team with 30 RBIs, has hit 17 doubles, and three triples. His 44 runs scored and 15 stolen bases lead the squad.

In the classroom, Bartlett is a business management major. He has carried a 3.66 GPA, and is on the FIT Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

District 5 includes athletes from the Sunshine State Conference, Gulf South Conference, and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Bartlett is now eligible to be named to the Capital One Academic All-American Team, which will be announced later in May.

Bartlett and the Panthers close out the 2014 season this weekend at No. 1 Tampa. The series begins Saturday night at 6 p.m. ET, and will conclude with a Sunday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Brown Selected Capital One Academic All-District for Softball

 SOFTBALL – Florida Tech sophomore outfielder Elaine Brown was chosen Capital One Academic All-District by the area’s sports information directors, announced on Thursday.

Brown is coming off a 2014 season in which she batted .303 with 40 hits, 20 walks and 23 runs scored. She finished fifth in the Sunshine State Conference with 20 stolen bases. Defensively, she registered 54 putouts and five assists from her outfield position.

A Covina, Calif. native, she is majoring in civil engineering. She holds a 3.57 GPA through her first three semesters at FIT.

NAMED ALL-SSC FIRST TEAM AS FRESHMAN

She was named All-SSC First Team as a freshman in 2013. Academically, she’s earned recognition on the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll and has been a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in each of her first two seasons.

Brown was named to the District 5 team, which encompasses student-athletes from the SSC, Gulf South Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The entire academic all-district team can be viewed at the link below the picture for this article.

Brown will now be considered for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, which will be announced later this month.

To be considered for the district award, nominees must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games or pitched at least 10.0 innings.

Baseball Closes Out the 2014 Season at No. 1 Tampa

BASEBALL – The Florida Tech Panthers will play the final three games of the season this weekend when they travel to face No. 1 Tampa. The Sunshine State Conference series begins Saturday night at the University of Tampa Baseball Field.

The Panthers (25-20, 9-12 SSC) had last weekend off from SSC competition, but the squad did play Saint Leo in a non-conference game back on April 22.

The Panthers rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but the Lions earned the 7-5 victory.

Sophomore Austin Allen leads the Panthers in hitting with a .349 average. Allen also leads the club with 33 RBIs.

Senior Jimmie Koch has been terrific for the Panthers over the last month. Koch has raised his batting average 62 points since March 22, and has hit seven home runs in that span.

Junior Scotty Ward leads the Panthers with a 2.00 ERA in 11 starts. Freshman Grant Willcoxon has the second best ERA on the staff with a 3.07.

The Spartans (45-2, 20-1 SSC) have been the top team in NCAA Division II for the entire season.

They swept then No. 8 Lynn last weekend, and clinched the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Championship for the third straight season.

The squad is also poised to host the NCAA Division II South Regional for the third straight year.

Tampa has the top ranked offense in the SSC, and Stephen Dezzi leads the squad with a .381 average.

Dezzi also leads the team with 42 RBIs.

Preston Packrall leads the Spartan pitching staff with an 8-0 record, and a 1.32 ERA.
