ABOVE VIDEO: Port Canaveral CEO John Walsh gives an update on the progress of The Cove project as the the first phase will include restaurants, retail, entertainment and an upscale hotel connecting the new cruise terminal 1 to the Exploration Tower. Streetscaping for the project could begin this fall, with construction expected to start next spring.
Work will soon be underway for the unanimously approved development of The Cove at Port Canaveral.
The project is being spearheaded by Sooner Investment and Collett. The 13 acre first phase of the $80 million project has a targeted completion of late 2016.
Phase 1 of development will serve as a connection between Terminal 1 and Exploration Tower. The Tower opened in November of 2013 and is a beautiful architectural focal point for the area.
It has seven floors of interactive activities and exhibits. It also hosts a theatre and observation deck and viewing areas for rocket launches.
The port commissioners have told developers they must remain mindful that the purpose of the development is not to detract from the current Space Coast tourism business, but to make it a tourist attraction unto itself.
Developers are confident that their development – which has been compared to Downtown Disney – will attract both local residents and tourists to Brevard County.
Streetscaping for the project should begin in the fall of 2015. Construction of the complex which will include entertainment, restaurants, retail and an upscale hotel is projected to start in early 2016.
