No. 17 Florida Tech Upsets No. 14 Stanford in Saturday’s Semifinal At Rowing Championships

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech’s 17th-ranked varsity eight edged 14th-ranked Stanford at the finish line for second place in Saturday’s fourth semifinal of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Mercer Lake.

The Panthers’ time was 5:45.579 to the Cardinal’s 5:45.770. No. 21 Hobart won the race with a time of 5:43.222.

Finishing fourth was 20th-ranked Drexel at 5:47.606. No. 23 Oklahoma City was fifth and 24th-ranked Santa Clara came in sixth.

Coxswain Aaron Evans, stroke Jose Gomez-Feria, Ernestas Zarskis, Nikola Selakovic, Joe Horn, Martynas Mickus, Andy Konecny, Phillip Machen and bow Kevin Coyle will now race in the third final on Saturday at 11:48 a.m.

They will once again line up alongside Stanford and Hobart along with 13th-ranked Dartmouth, 15th-ranked Wisconsin and 18th-ranked Holy Cross.

Immediately following the varsity eight’s semifinal, FIT’s 20th-ranked second varsity eight of coxswain Beatriz Saldana, stroke Carson Green, Vicente Aycart, Marko Milovanovic, Chris Field, Hank Walch, John Martin, Batuhan Cakici and bow Nate Hodge nabbed fourth at 6:04.717 in the third semifinal.

No. 13 Navy crossed the finish line first at 5:51.407 with 17th-ranked George Washington and 15th-ranked Oregon State coming in second and third, respectively. No. 21 Holy Cross finished in the fifth and final spot at 6:07.116.

The Panthers will now race in Sunday’s fourth final of the second varsity eight at 9:24 a.m.
