Florida Tech Earns No. 2 Seed In SSC Basketball Tournament, No. 7 Eckerd Up Next

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Picked to finish sixth in the conference this season, Florida Tech (18-8, 12-4 SSC) shamed the preseason selection, winning 12-of-16 in league play en route to garnering the No. 2 overall seed in this week’s Sunshine State Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament, announced by the league office Saturday night.
This year the Panthers finished 12-4 in SSC play, with all four SSC loses coming in season sweeps at the hands of Nova Southeastern and Rollins.
As a top four seed, Florida Tech will host its quarterfinal round matchup against the No. 7 seed Eckerd (12-13, 6-10 SSC) on March 2 at 7 p.m. at the Clemente Center. The Panthers came out victorious in both meetings with the Tritons this season, winning 69-49 on Dec. 2 in St. Petersburg, Florida and 62-55 on Jan. 30 in Melbourne.
Nova Southeastern (22-5, 13-3 SSC) snagged the No. 1 overall seed after taking home the SSC regular season championship for a second consecutive season. The Sharks host No. 8 Lynn (4-21, 2-14 SSC) in their first round matchup.
Florida Southern (23-4, 12-4 SSC) claimed the third seed and takes on the No. 6 seed Rollins (13-13, 7-9 SSC). Barry (19-8, 10-6 SSC) finished fourth in conference play and draws No. 5 seed Tampa (16-12, 9-7 SSC).
Higher seeds will host during the quarterfinal rounds in the 2016 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Basketball Championships. Semifinals and finals will be held at the ICI Center on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach.
The tournament moves to the ICI Center after three years at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. Prior to Silver Spurs Arena, the tournaments were held at member institutions from 2002 to 2012.
SSC tournament play begins on Wednesday, March 2nd and concludes on Sunday, March 6th.
