Merritt Island takes over as the new No. 1 team

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Week 1 came and went, but not without some noise. Merritt Island beat Cocoa for the first time in 18 years, and Titusville won in walk-off fashion with controversy. Melbourne looks to be putting the county on notice after their dominating wins, and Schneider is off to a hot start at MCC.

*Rankings are based on each team’s performance, results, and strength of schedule.

No. 1 – Merritt Island Mustangs (1-0)

There’s a new number one in the county after Merritt Island’s dominate 44-19 victory over the Cocoa Tigers on their soil. The Mustangs will be look to cement themselves in that number one spot this week as they hit the road and go to Melbourne.

Next game: Friday, August 28 @ Melbourne

No. 2 – Eau Gallie Commodores (0-1)

Do not get it confused, the Commodores are still probably the team to beat in Brevard County, but they have a lot to figure out after the were beat start to finish 41-7 by Carrollwood Day. With them having to travel to Tampa and play a team that went to the final four and finished 12-1 a season ago they cannot drop too far in the ranks.

Next game: Friday, August 28 @ Heritage

No. 3 – Melbourne Bulldogs (1-0)

The bulldogs made another statement last week beating Heritage comfortably. Melbourne has already shocked people with how they beat Cocoa and Heritage and they will have another opportunity to put the county on notice this Friday when they host Merritt Island.

Next game: Friday, August 28 vs Merritt Island

No. 4 – Titusville Terriers (1-0)

After a strong showing against Cardinal Gibbons, Titusville felt confident at home opening the season against Oviedo. Titusville walked it off on a 42-yard field goal to win 24-22, but not without some controversy. There was a fair argument from the Oviedo side that Titusville should have never even had the chance to set up for a game winning field goal.

Next game: Friday, August 28 @ Holy Trinity

No. 5 – Viera Hawks (1-0)

The Hawks had to overcome a weather delay and poor field conditions as they defeated cross-town rivals, Rockledge. The game lived up to the expectation that the “Backyard brawl” is supposed to. Viera will look to keep their great season start going as they go on the road again.

Next game: Friday, August 28 @ Sebastian River

No. 6 – Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers’ (1-0)

Granted MCC has not faced a great defense yet, their offense looks as good as anyone’s does across the county. The next two weeks they are in for a challenge as they will take on Benjamin and Bishop Moore, but with Trenton Washington and Noah Flores starring the offense they should be able to move the ball.

Next game; Friday, August 28 vs Benjamin

No. 7 – Cocoa Tigers (0-1)

Cocoa still has plenty of talent on the field that can win them some games, however they are very young and do not have a lot of depth. The lack of depth is what started to wear them down when they hosted Merritt Island last week, they will have another tough test as they host Fort Pierce Central Friday.

Next game: Friday, August 28 vs Fort Pierce Central

No. 8 – Heritage Panthers (0-1)

Heritage was just flat out beat from start to finish by Melbourne, but the road for the Panthers will not get any easier as they host Eau Gallie this week. If the Panthers can somehow pull off the upset or keep the game close that will go a long way for them this season.

Next game: Friday, August 28 vs Eau Gallie
